Self-medication, often seen as a quick fix for emotional or physical pain, is an increasingly common yet dangerous habit. Many individuals turn to alcohol, prescription pills, or illicit substances in search of relief. However, this practice can mask deeper issues like trauma, anxiety, or chronic stress, warns Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. Instead of healing, self-medication often spirals into dependence, worsening mental and physical health.
Misuse of medications or unregulated substances can lead to organ damage and irreversible side effects. Dr. Chatterjee stresses the need for professional intervention therapies like CBT help uncover root causes and teach healthier coping strategies. Building a strong support system of friends, family, and professionals is crucial for recovery.
Alternatives like regular exercise, mindfulness, and engaging hobbies not only reduce stress but also foster emotional resilience. Replacing substances with self-care can transform pain into growth and lead to true healing.
