Licorice root, known as mulethi in traditional medicine, has been recognized for its therapeutic properties, particularly in treating gastric ulcers. A study by the Faculty of Pharmacy at Al-Isra University in Jordan demonstrated that licorice exhibits anti-ulcer activity comparable to famotidine, a standard ulcer medication, in a rat model of indomethacin-induced ulcers.
Notably, combining licorice with famotidine resulted in greater ulcer reduction than either treatment alone, suggesting that incorporating licorice into ulcer treatment regimens could enhance therapeutic outcomes.
The anti-ulcer effects of licorice are attributed to its bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and glycyrrhizinic acid, which possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds increase mucus production in the stomach, protecting the gastric lining and promoting healing.
