India’s fashion story goes far beyond popular silks and handlooms. Across states, several lesser-known textiles are quietly making a comeback, thanks to designers who are bringing forgotten crafts into modern wardrobes. From Andhra Pradesh’s Alamkar fabric, once woven with metallic shine, to Arunachal Pradesh’s loin-loom textiles, these traditions carry deep cultural roots.
In Assam, soft and sustainable eri silk is being redesigned for everyday wear. Bihar’s storytelling-rich sujani embroidery now appears in minimal, urban silhouettes. Goa’s checked handwoven cotton is finding space in slow-fashion collections, while Gujarat’s naturally grown kala cotton is gaining attention for its eco-friendly appeal.
Punjab’s vibrant phulkari is evolving with lighter threads and cleaner patterns, while Mizoram’s puan and Meghalaya’s kheng embroidery are being styled for contemporary fashion lovers. Even the humble lungi, traditionally worn in Puducherry, is being reimagined on global ramps.
These revivals are not just about clothing. They protect heritage, support artisans, and prove that India’s forgotten textiles can still shape the future of fashion.
