Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a transformative force in India's energy sector, from smart grid optimization and predictive maintenance to renewable integration and storage dispatch systems. Platforms like BrightNight’s PowerAlpha are already managing hybrid solar-wind-battery systems, optimizing dispatch and prolonging battery life . AI-enabled forecasting similarly helps predict renewable output using weather and demand data, enhancing grid reliability .
However, several deep-seated challenges must be addressed. India’s aging grid infrastructure and fragmented, outdated data systems limit AI scalability . Distribution companies struggle financially, delaying investments in digitalization, while intermittent renewable supply demands large-scale energy storage and transmission upgrades .
Funding gaps and equity concerns also loom large. Building AI-ready grids and storage frameworks requires blended public-private investment, green bonds, and targeted subsidies . Ensuring that marginalized populations benefit - aligned with energy justice principles - is essential if India’s green transition is to be inclusive .
Success hinges on integrated policy - spanning AI, renewables, data infrastructure, and grid modernization - and upskilling the workforce. If India can align technological innovation with equitable access and robust infrastructure, AI could truly accelerate its energy transformation.
