From beauty influencers to skincare enthusiasts, ice rollers have become a staple in many morning routines. The cooling tool is often praised for reducing puffiness, calming the skin, and making pores appear smaller.
But can an ice roller really shrink your pores?
According to dermatologists, the answer is no. Pore size is largely determined by factors such as genetics, skin type, age, and sun damage. Since pores do not have muscles that open and close, they cannot physically shrink through cold exposure.
What an ice roller does is create a temporary tightening effect. The cold temperature constricts blood vessels, making the skin look firmer and smoother for a short period. As a result, pores may appear less noticeable, but their actual size remains unchanged.
That doesn't mean ice rollers are useless. Many experts agree they can help reduce facial puffiness, soothe mild inflammation, calm redness, and provide a refreshing feeling, especially in the morning.
However, those looking for long-term improvement in pore appearance may need to focus on consistent skincare habits. Ingredients such as retinoids, salicylic acid, and sunscreen can help improve skin texture and keep pores looking clearer over time.
Experts also caution against placing ice directly on the skin for prolonged periods, as it may cause irritation or damage sensitive skin.
While ice rollers can offer a quick refresh and temporary glow, they are not a miracle solution for shrinking pores. When it comes to skincare, consistency often delivers better results than viral hacks.
