“WhatsApp” may soon introduce one of its biggest privacy updates yet - usernames. The new feature could allow people to connect and chat without sharing their personal phone numbers, bringing WhatsApp closer to platforms like Instagram and Telegram.
Instead of giving someone your mobile number, users may soon be able to share a unique username for messaging. This means strangers, online sellers, community groups, or temporary contacts may no longer need direct access to your number just to start a conversation.
The feature is currently being tested for selected Android and iPhone users. Reports suggest usernames will be optional, meaning users can continue using phone numbers normally if they prefer. WhatsApp is also expected to add restrictions to usernames to prevent fake accounts, spam, and impersonation attempts.
Privacy experts believe this update could become a major shift for the platform, especially as concerns around online safety, scams, and unwanted contact continue growing. For creators, businesses, and public-facing professionals, usernames may offer a safer way to interact online without exposing personal details.
The move also reflects a larger trend in social media where platforms are focusing more on privacy-first communication instead of public exposure.
If rolled out globally, WhatsApp usernames could completely change the way millions of people connect online.
