A simple seafood delicacy from Goa is now gaining global attention for its environmental benefits. Clams, commonly used in coastal Goan dishes, are being recognised as one of the most climate-friendly protein sources compared to meat and large-scale seafood farming. Experts say these shellfish grow naturally in coastal waters and require very little human intervention, making them a low-impact food option.

Unlike industrial farming, clams do not need extra feed, freshwater, fertilisers, or large processing systems to survive. They naturally filter water while growing, which can help improve marine ecosystems and maintain ocean health. Because of these benefits, many environmental experts now see clams as a sustainable alternative for people looking to adopt healthier and eco-friendly diets.

In Goa, clam harvesting has been part of local food culture for generations. Coastal communities have long depended on shellfish not only for daily meals but also for livelihood and traditional practices. However, pollution, overharvesting, and climate change are slowly threatening these marine species in several coastal regions.
