For Gen Z, drinks are no longer just about taste or caffeine - they have become a source of comfort, identity, and emotional stability. From iced coffee and matcha to Diet Coke and boba tea, many young people now describe their favourite beverages as “emotional support drinks.”
Experts believe these drinks act like small coping mechanisms during stressful routines and emotionally exhausting days. Simple habits like carrying an iced coffee, sipping matcha while working, or ordering the same drink daily can create a feeling of comfort and familiarity.
Social media has also played a major role in this trend. Aesthetic café videos, coffee culture content, and viral “Diet Coke obsession” memes have turned beverages into lifestyle symbols online. For many users, these drinks represent personality, mood, and even social identity.
Interestingly, many Gen Z consumers are also shifting away from alcohol and choosing coffee, wellness drinks, mocktails, and energy beverages instead. Experts say these drinks often feel like affordable “small luxuries” during financially and emotionally stressful times.
For many young people today, these beverages are less about thirst and more about comfort, routine, and emotional escape in everyday life.
