The Invisible Office: The Heavy Toll On India’s Remote IT Workforce!

The "Work From Home" (WFH) revolution is often sold as a perk, but for India's IT army, it has become a costly burden. Research involving workers in hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad reveals that employees are essentially subsidizing their multi-billion-dollar employers. A primary "hidden cost" is the investment in private infrastructure; since power cuts are routine, many junior workers spend up to £400 (a full month’s salary) on domestic battery backup systems just to stay online. These bulky units now occupy precious space in cramped, multi-generational apartments, physically and financially crowding out the families they were meant to support.

Beyond the financial drain, the emotional and social costs are staggering. With more than half of India's population living in extended families, "home" has become a high-stakes stage for professional choreography. Workers must balance crying babies and elderly relatives with the need for a quiet, professional video backdrop. Surveillance has also moved into the living room, with AI-driven tracking systems monitoring every keystroke and website visit. In some extreme cases, managers have even demanded photos of the house as "proof" of a local power outage.

The growing frustration led to mass protests in 2025, with workers demanding a "legal right to disconnect" and opposing government proposals to extend workdays to 12 hours. As the digital divide between a developer in Boston and one in Bengaluru widens, experts argue that "working from home" is not a universal experience. Until global corporations and policymakers address these localized infrastructure and boundary failures, the "flexibility" of remote work will remain a one-sided deal, with Indian workers bearing the heavy, invisible price of global connectivity.
