A rental ad from a Chennai landlord stating “Non‑veg eaters need not apply” has stirred controversy by highlighting the subtle yet persistent bias in urban housing markets. The ad, shared on social media by resident Prashanth Rangaswamy, triggered a wave of reactions suggesting that food choices are being unjustly used as a criteria for tenancy .
Critics argue this kind of exclusion mirrors deeper prejudices, akin to caste, religion, or regional discrimination. One user noted that “few people reject tenants based on caste or religion too… they simply say: sorry, we don’t rent to Muslims,” drawing parallels between dietary and communal bias
However, some defended the landlord’s stance, citing personal preference or concerns - such as the smell of meat - claiming it's their right to enforce conditions on their property . Others attempted to differentiate dietary preferences from caste or religious discrimination.
This incident underscores the need for broader discussion on housing inclusivity and whether dietary biases should influence tenancy decisions. As urban migration increases in Indian metros, the debate sheds light on ongoing challenges renters face in finding equitable housing.
