At age 13 in Kishanganj, Bihar, Roshni Perween was forced to marry a 45-year-old man. By 15, she was a young mother enduring abuse yet she chose courage over despair, leaving the marriage and working menial jobs to reshape her destiny.
Today in her mid-20s, Roshni stands as a powerful voice against child marriage mobilizing her village, counselling parents, and directly preventing over 60 child marriages through awareness, advocacy, and empathetic outreach.
Her strategies are both practical and transformative: calling for mandatory monthly awareness sessions in schools, integrating child marriage laws into curricula, strengthening protection committees at the village and block levels, creating adolescent peer groups for outreach, and personally following up with girls at risk to ensure their safety.
Roshni's journey from victimhood to agency embodies the profound impact of grassroots leadership in tackling social taboos. Her work demonstrates that knowledge, empathy, and determination can rewrite painful narratives into stories of empowerment and hope.
