Across high latitudes, daylight behaves wildly differently depending on the season. In parts of countries like Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, the United States (Alaska), Greenland, Canada, and Russia, summer brings the midnight sun, where the sun doesn’t set for weeks.
- In Norway’s Arctic regions (Tromsø, Svalbard etc.), this lasts from late April to August.
- In Finnish and Swedish Lapland, summer daylight stretches into late evenings and early mornings without full dark.
Winter flips the script: some of these places endure polar night periods where the sun doesn’t rise for days or even months. The long days are celebrated with outdoor festivals, hikes, fjord trips, and nocturnal adventures under a sun that seems unsure about setting.
For travellers, timing is everything: to witness perpetual twilight or midnight daylight, visit around the summer solstice; for the spell of darkness, head in winter. These natural light extremes don’t just affect the schedules they shape culture, mental rhythms, landscapes, and ways of life in these remote zones.
