Delhi is experiencing unseasonal, heavy rainfall even though the monsoon has officially withdrawn, according to senior India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar. While monsoon is no longer active over Delhi and the northwest region, the rain is being triggered by low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea that are influencing weather patterns inland.
These systems are stirring moisture and instability over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, thus fueling showers this week. Light rain is expected to linger around Delhi through Thursday. Looking ahead, a western disturbance due around October 4 may further intensify rainfall across northwest India, and heavy showers are forecast for the western Himalayas by October 6.
Today’s maximum temperature in Delhi is projected around 35 °C, and the minimum hovers near 28.7 °C—about 5.4 °C above normal. Meanwhile, air quality measured via AQI is in the “moderate” zone, recorded at 114 in the morning.
This scenario highlights that monsoon withdrawal doesn’t mean immediate cessation of rains - regional atmospheric systems and moisture flows can still provoke significant precipitation during transitional periods.
