Supreme Court to hear Case on Green Crackers on October 10!

The Supreme Court of India is set to hear crucial matters on October 10 regarding the manufacturing and sale of “green” firecrackers, especially within the Delhi-NCR region.

On September 26, the Court had granted interim permission to certified manufacturers (NEERI- and PESO-approved) to produce green crackers, with the explicit condition that they not sell them within the prohibited areas of Delhi-NCR without the apex court’s approval.  The bench also directed the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change to consult stakeholders - including manufacturers, sellers, and the Delhi government - before framing a long-term policy.

During hearings, manufacturers have sought relaxation of bans, while environmental advocates argue that even “green” variants can leak into local markets, undermining air quality goals.  The upcoming hearing comes just ahead of Diwali, making the court’s decision especially significant for policy clarity and enforcement in the festive season.
