The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, have become a major travel dream for many Indians, especially after NASA astronaut Jonny Kim shared a stunning space-shot video of the glowing green sky. The viral footage has pushed travellers to search for real places where they can witness this magical natural phenomenon.
For Indian travellers, Hanle Dark Sky Reserve in Ladakh is one of the most promising spots. As India’s first Dark Sky Reserve, Hanle offers high altitude, minimal pollution, and exceptionally clear skies. While aurora sightings here are rare, strong geomagnetic storms can create faint auroral glows on the northern horizon, making it a unique possibility within India.
Travellers willing to go abroad can rely on classic aurora destinations such as Tromsø in Norway, Iceland, Finnish Lapland, and Kiruna in Sweden. These regions consistently offer the world’s best Northern Lights displays between September and March.
With proper planning, dark skies, and a little luck, watching the dancing lights becomes a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
