Actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran has addressed the controversy around his film L2: Empuraan, rejecting claims that it was made as a political manifesto. He confirmed the full script was narrated to lead actor Mohanlal and the producer before filming began, countering rumors that they were unaware of its contents.
Prithviraj emphasized that his motive was to entertain — not to promote any political ideology. He added that, if he ever wanted to express his personal political views, he would do so openly on social media, rather than through films.
Prithviraj also spoke about the toxicity of online discourse, warning of the “weaponisation” of social media: people can twist any message, turning creators into villains or heroes. He reiterated that honesty carries no fear — “If what you say is honest, then there is no need to fear anyone.”
The remarks come after Empuraan faced heavy criticism over scenes allegedly referencing the 2002 Gujarat riots. He reiterated that honesty carries no fear — “If what you say is honest, then there is no need to fear anyone.” Prithviraj’s clarification aims to separate creative storytelling from partisan messaging, and to restore focus to the film’s intent.
