In the cyclone-hit Sundarbans of West Bengal, one man’s determination turned into a powerful movement that now protects entire villages. Akul Biswas, a visually impaired environmental activist, chose action over limitation and began planting mangroves to fight floods and rising sea levels.
Years ago, repeated cyclones destroyed homes, farmland, and lives in South 24 Parganas. Akul realised that mangroves could act as a natural shield, slowing strong winds and preventing erosion. Despite losing his eyesight, he started motivating locals to restore these forests instead of depending only on government help.
What began as a small effort slowly grew into a community mission. Today, more than 200 women from nearby villages actively take part in planting and protecting mangroves. Many of them are widows or homemakers who now play a key role in conservation work. Together, they plant thousands of saplings every year along riverbanks and embankments.
Their efforts have made a visible difference. Areas with dense mangrove cover now face less damage during cyclones, and villages feel safer than before. Beyond protection, the initiative has created awareness, confidence, and purpose within the community.
Akul Biswas’s journey proves that real change doesn’t need perfect conditions - just courage, consistency, and collective action.
