Meta’s social text-based platform Threads has quietly eclipsed Elon Musk’s X in daily mobile active users, marking an important milestone in the ongoing battle for social media attention. According to market intelligence data from Similarweb, Threads’ daily app usage on iOS and Android now sits above X’s, underlining the platform’s accelerating momentum in early 2026.
The shift reflects Threads’ steady growth over months, even without the controversy and policy upheavals that have dogged X. Meta has refined Threads with regular feature updates — including interest-based communities, enhanced posting tools, long-form text support and interactive filters — making the app more engaging for both creators and everyday users. Its integration with Instagram and ongoing cross-promotion across Meta’s ecosystem also help funnel users into the app more seamlessly than rival platforms.
X, long the dominant platform for short-form text conversations, still maintains strong web usage and a loyal core audience. But Threads’ climb in mobile daily usage signals a notable change in user behaviour, especially among mobile-first audiences and creators. As both platforms evolve, this fresh metric highlights how competition in social engagement is shifting toward richer mobile experiences.
