In a first for Northwest India, Bamanwas Kankar panchayat in Rajasthan has become the first village body to be fully organic certified, transforming its entire agricultural and livestock systems to chemical-free and ecological practices. The certification covers the village’s farmland and more than 6,000 cattle, reflecting a collective decision by farmers — led significantly by women — to eliminate synthetic fertilisers and chemical pesticides and adopt natural, sustainable farming methods.
This shift was community-driven rather than externally imposed: residents observed declining soil health, water contamination and health issues linked to chemical inputs, and chose instead to prioritise long-term environmental and human health. The entire panchayat took a pledge to farm and manage livestock according to strict organic standards, integrating agricultural practices with ecological stewardship.
The move aligns with broader organic farming principles, which emphasise biodiversity, soil health, reduced pollution and safe food production. By adopting organic manure, bio-inputs and traditional ecological techniques, the panchayat aims to restore soil fertility, conserve groundwater and improve livelihoods through healthier produce and potentially higher organic market value.
Bamanwas Kankar’s achievement not only positions it as a model of sustainable rural transformation but also sets a replicable example for other communities across India looking to reduce dependency on chemicals, protect natural resources, and build resilient and environmentally harmonious farming systems.
