Bangladesh is preparing for a significant political transition as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman gears up to take oath as the country’s next Prime Minister on February 17. In a gesture reflecting regional diplomacy, Dhaka formally invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony alongside other South Asian leaders. The invitation underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining stable bilateral relations during a leadership shift.
However, reports indicate that Modi is unlikely to attend due to prior commitments, including high-level engagements in India and a scheduled meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron. Instead, India will be represented by senior officials, signalling continued diplomatic participation without disrupting existing international commitments.
The BNP leadership has repeatedly emphasised its intent to reset and strengthen ties with neighbouring countries, particularly India, amid regional security and economic concerns. Analysts view the invitation as an early diplomatic outreach aimed at reassuring partners about continuity in cooperation, trade, and regional stability. The ceremony is expected to draw attention across South Asia, as Bangladesh’s new administration begins shaping its foreign policy priorities while navigating domestic expectations and international partnerships.
