Guatemala’s currency is called the quetzal, named after one of the most beautiful and mysterious birds in Central America. With its bright green feathers and long flowing tail, the quetzal wasn’t just admired - it was worshipped.
For the ancient Maya civilisation, the quetzal symbolised freedom and power. There’s a popular belief that the bird cannot survive in captivity, which is why it became a sign of independence. Its feathers were considered more precious than gold and were worn only by kings and high priests.
In 1925, when Guatemala replaced its old peso, the country chose the name quetzal for its new currency to reflect pride, history, and freedom. Even today, the bird appears on the national flag, coat of arms, and banknotes.
Though the quetzal is now rare and protected, its legacy lives on every time Guatemalans use their currency - turning money into a reminder of culture and identity.
