In January 1941, at age 43, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose executed what would become one of the most dramatic episodes of India’s freedom struggle — a meticulously planned Great Escape from British-ruled India. Under strict surveillance in his Elgin Road home in Calcutta, Bose knew conventional politics had reached its limit after disagreements with the Congress leadership and increasing pressure from colonial authorities. Determined to seek external support for India’s independence, he secretly left Calcutta on the night of January 16–17, 1941 , disguised as a North Indian Muslim named Muhammad Ziauddin and driven by his nephew toGomoh railway junction (now in Jharkhand).
From Gomoh, he boarded the Delhi–Kalka Mail — later renamed Netaji Express in his honour — which began his journey out of British India. By January 26, he had crossed the empire’s border en route to Kabul and beyond. The British authorities only realised he had vanished days later, on January 27, causing widespread surprise and embarrassment for colonial intelligence.
Bose’s journey didn’t end at escape; he travelled through Afghanistan and the Soviet Union before reaching Berlin in March 1941, where he sought international backing for India’s freedom fight. This bold move laid the groundwork for his later leadership of the Indian National Army (INA) and his global campaign against British rule.
Netaji’s exit from India remains a defining symbol of his relentless commitment to independence — not simply a flight from surveillance, but a strategic leap toward global alliances and a broader struggle for freedom.
