Choosing the right sunscreen for children can feel confusing with so many options available. However, the most important factor is how well the sunscreen protects the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Experts recommend selecting a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays, and a water-resistant formula to keep kids protected during outdoor activities.
There are two main types of sunscreen. Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and act as a barrier that reflects sunlight, while chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and release them as heat. Sunscreens also come in creams, sprays, gels, and sticks, allowing parents to choose what works best for different parts of the body.
To protect kids effectively, sunscreen should be applied generously about 15–30 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Along with sunscreen, wearing hats, protective clothing, and limiting sun exposure helps keep children safe.
