Indian defense startup ecosystem has reached a major milestone with the unveiling of Project KAL by IG Defence. This indigenous "kamikaze" or one-way attack drone is being developed to provide the Indian Armed Forces with an affordable, high-impact asymmetric warfare capability, drawing strategic comparisons to the globally recognized Iranian Shahed-136 systems.
Key Technical Specifications
• Operational Range: Up to 1,000 kilometers, allowing for strikes far beyond frontline positions into contested enemy territory.
• Endurance: The drone can remain airborne for 3 to 5 hours, providing ample time for loitering, target observation, and flight path adjustments before execution.
• Payload: It is designed to carry a high-explosive warhead capable of neutralizing critical assets such as radar installations, logistics hubs, and strategic infrastructure.
• Tactical Advantage: As a low-cost unmanned platform, it can be deployed in "swarms" to overwhelm advanced air defense systems, forcing adversaries to expend significantly more expensive interceptor missiles.
Strategic & Industrial Impact
Developed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) vision, Project KAL addresses the growing need for indigenous deep-strike capabilities. Maj Gen R C Padhi (Retd), Senior Vice-President at IG Defence, emphasized that the project aims to build a home-grown ecosystem for long-range strike drones, reducing dependency on foreign technology.
