Your LPG cylinder and the petrol in your bike may feel completely local. But their journey often begins thousands of kilometres away - and passes through one narrow waterway: the Strait of Hormuz.
This 33-km-wide passage connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and carries nearly 20% of the world’s petroleum supply. For India, the link is significant. Nearly 88% of the country’s crude oil is imported, and an estimated 35–50% of that passes through Hormuz.
LPG imports from Gulf nations like Qatar and United Arab Emirates also transit this route.
If tensions rise there, petrol pumps won’t suddenly run dry. But prices can react fast. Even rumours can push global crude rates up, increasing India’s fuel import bill.
India does maintain strategic reserves and diversified suppliers. Still, for everyday households, the biggest impact is usually higher fuel costs - not empty cylinders.
