Ageing is supposed to follow one straight road - birth, growth, decline, death. But nature loves breaking its own rules. A few fascinating species have found ways to slow, pause, or even reverse ageing.
The most shocking example is the Turritopsis dohrnii, often called the “immortal jellyfish.” When injured or stressed, it can revert from its adult stage back to its juvenile form, essentially restarting its life cycle.
Then there’s the Hydra, a tiny freshwater creature that shows almost no signs of ageing thanks to constant stem cell renewal.
The Axolotl amazes scientists with its power to regrow limbs, parts of the heart, and even brain tissue.
Meanwhile, Lobster continue producing telomerase, helping repair DNA and extend their lifespan.
Lastly, Planarian flatworms can regenerate their entire body from fragments, showing negligible senescence.
Evolution clearly has more surprises than we imagine.
