Majnu Ka Tila, one of Delhi’s most loved food and hangout spots, may soon face major changes. The Delhi High Court has ordered authorities to take action against illegal eateries and structures operating in the area, raising concerns for both business owners and visitors.
The court observed that several buildings in Majnu Ka Tila are unauthorised, poorly planned, and unsafe, with many lacking approved building plans, fire safety clearances, and proper staircases. Some structures reportedly go up to 7–8 floors, including illegal basements and rooftop constructions, increasing the risk during emergencies.
What makes the issue serious is the heavy footfall, especially from Delhi University students and young visitors, who crowd the area daily. The court warned that such unsafe constructions could lead to serious accidents if a fire or emergency occurs.
Authorities like the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and local bodies have been given around three months to examine the situation and take action. This could mean removal, sealing, or closure of eateries that fail to meet safety and legal norms.
While this doesn’t mean Majnu Ka Tila will shut down completely, cafés and restaurants operating illegally may be forced to close unless they comply. The order has sparked concern among food lovers who fear losing one of Delhi’s most popular cultural hubs.
