When arthritis robbed Soumita Basu of 80% mobility in 2019, even dressing became a painful challenge. Her mother, Amita, noticed how fashion ignored people with disabilities, leaving them without dignity or independence. Determined to change this, the duo began sketching designs and experimenting with local tailors. With just ₹21,000, they created Zyenika, a brand of adaptive clothing.
Unlike traditional fashion, Zyenika focuses on inclusivity — garments come with magnetic closures, Velcro fastenings, no-bend trousers, and concealed openings. These thoughtful details allow people with arthritis, spinal injuries, chronic pain, or old age to dress with independence. Importantly, each piece is designed to look stylish, dignified, and wearable for anyone.
The journey wasn’t easy — every prototype brought failures, but also breakthroughs. Gradually, Zyenika attracted grants, mentors, and loyal customers. Today, it partners with women-led tailoring units and single mothers, creating not just clothes but livelihoods.
For many customers, Zyenika’s clothing has been life-changing — restoring dignity, boosting confidence, and giving independence back. From a child staying in school to professionals feeling empowered, their impact is profound. Soumita says it best: “Clothes must fit the body, not the other way round.”
