Fashion once symbolized freedom and self-expression - but today, it’s becoming a mirror of unrealistic beauty and silent body shaming. Runways that once embraced diversity are now dominated by painfully thin silhouettes, reintroducing the old, toxic narrative that only a specific body type is “fashionable.” The recent Paris Fashion Week shocked many, featuring cruel designs that seemed more like mockery than creativity.
Instead of empowering women, modern fashion often profits from their insecurities - making them feel inadequate to sell more. Critics argue that the industry has lost touch with real women, their emotions, and their bodies. The purpose of fashion should be to celebrate individuality, not suppress it under the weight of trends.
As designer Vanessa Friedman writes, the question remains - is fashion still about art and identity, or just another business that thrives on self-doubt? Until inclusivity returns, the glossy ramps might continue to sparkle, but the soul of fashion stays dim.
