Coined by Canadian cookbook author Mairlyn Smith, the term came to life when she and her husband began nightly walks after their famously fibre-rich dinners. “We walked… cue the farts… and the legendary fart walk was born,” she shared, proving that flatulence can be funny and functional.
As it turns out, medical experts are totally on board. Dr. Tim Tiutan from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre confirms that a little light movement after a meal helps get things — ahem — moving along in your intestines. “It prevents constipation and helps gas pass,” he said, probably while trying not to laugh.
And science is backing this gassy groove. Japanese researchers found that walking after meals helps control blood sugar spikes. Meanwhile, other studies say 15 minutes of walking can boost heart health just like a quick run — but without the sweating or Lycra.
So yes, your granny’s post-lunch stroll was actually peak biohacking. And now, thanks to the internet’s love for oversharing and bodily humor, “fart walks” are trending for all the right (and wrong) reasons.
Bottom line? Don’t hold back. Let it out, take a stroll, and walk your way to wellness — one glorious puff at a time.
