Elective C-Section- A safe choice or a risky gamble?

An elective C-section is a planned surgical procedure for childbirth, performed before labour begins. According to Dr. Shweta Mendiratta, Associate Director of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad, this procedure is chosen either due to medical necessity or personal preference.

It is typically scheduled at or after 39 weeks of pregnancy to minimize the risks associated with premature birth.

Women opt for this procedure for various reasons, including previous delivery complications, aversion to labour pains, or personal choice. In some cases, medical conditions like placenta previa or foetal positioning make a planned C-section essential for the safety of both mother and baby.

While generally safe when conducted in a well-equipped facility by skilled professionals, an elective C-section remains a major surgical procedure and requires caution. Dr. Mendiratta emphasizes it should only be considered after thorough medical assessment and consultation about its benefits and risks.

Recovery from a C-section is long, brutal, and unforgiving, each movement a sharp jolt of pain. Infections can rage, bleeding may turn life-threatening, and hidden blood clots lurk dangerously. Anaesthesia adds uncertainty, making every step unpredictable.

But the true danger lies ahead, with each surgery, the uterus weakens, inching toward rupture, while placenta accreta and adhesions tighten their grip, making future pregnancies a high-stakes gamble.

It is important to understand the risks, long-term effects, and recovery process before choosing a C-section. Talking to a doctor and thinking about all factors helps ensure the safest choice for both mother and baby.
