In a small village near Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, an 85-year-old woman named M. Kamalathal has become a beacon of compassion and dedication. Fondly called "Idli Amma," she has been selling idlis for just ₹1 each for over three decades, earning the admiration of people across the country.
Kamalathal's journey began with a simple goal: to ensure that even the poorest laborers could afford a nutritious meal. Every day, she wakes up before dawn to prepare idlis, sambhar, and chutney on a traditional wood-fired stove. Her customers, primarily daily wage earners, rely on her for a hearty breakfast that costs them less than a cup of tea elsewhere.
Despite rising costs of ingredients, Kamalathal has never wavered in her mission. When asked how she manages, she humbly replies, “It’s not about profit; it’s about helping those in need.” Her selfless dedication caught national attention in 2019, leading to an outpouring of support. Industrialist Anand Mahindra provided her with an LPG connection to ease her cooking process, and several philanthropists contributed to her cause.
In 2021, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin handed over a new house to Kamalathal, recognizing her invaluable service to the community. Yet, her lifestyle remains simple. She continues to work tirelessly, embodying the spirit of service above self.
Idli Amma's story is not just about affordable idlis; it's a lesson in resilience and humanity. Her humble thatched-roof eatery has become a landmark, attracting visitors eager to meet the woman who epitomizes kindness and perseverance.
Kamalathal's legacy transcends her village. A short film directed by Parth kariya was released on her life titled " Idli Amma " in the year 2023. it gained global recognition and got nominated for several awards. Her journey reminds us that small acts of generosity can have a profound impact, inspiring countless others to give back to their communities. In a world increasingly driven by profit, Idli Amma's story is a heartwarming testament to the power of compassion.
