India’s booming adventure-sports industry—from paragliding in Bir Billing to white-water rafting in Rishikesh—is gaining popularity, but concerns over cost, safety, and regulation persist. As tourism rebounds, adrenaline junkies are drawn to high-octane experiences like bungee jumping in Rishikesh, yak-biking across Ladakh’s rugged terrain, zip-lining over Kerala’s scenic valleys, and scuba diving off the Andamans.
The surge in demand has developed a ₹15,000‑crore (USD 2 billion) domestic adventure-tourism market, projected to more than double by 2028. That growth is buoyed by rising incomes, better infrastructure, and improved safety measures by tour operators . While participants seek unforgettable experiences—from skydiving over Maharashtra’s Amby Valley to trekking the Zanskar rivers—incidents and lax oversight have sparked safety alarms.
Experts caution that many operators still lack standardized protocols. Sustainable practices and regulatory frameworks remain patchy, especially in remote regions like Kumaon or Meghalaya. Activists urge stricter enforcement of existing guidelines by the Ministry of Tourism and better training for guides.
