Extend the Life of Your Avocados

Cutting into a ripe avocado only to see it brown quickly can be disheartening. This browning occurs due to oxidation when the fruit's flesh is exposed to air. However, simple techniques can help preserve its freshness :

  • Lemon or Lime Juice: Applying a light coat of lemon or lime juice on the cut surface can slow down browning. The citric acid acts as a barrier against oxidation.
  • Plastic Wrap: Tightly covering the avocado with plastic wrap, ensuring minimal air contact, can help maintain its color and texture.
  • Onion Method: Storing the avocado with a slice of onion in an airtight container can reduce browning. The sulfur compounds in onions help preserve the avocado.
