In Varanasi, centuries-old cremation ghats Manikarnika and Harishchandra seen as sacred gateways to salvation are being thoughtfully modernized. Slated for completion by 2026, the initiative blends spiritual reverence with sustainable innovation, introducing smokeless cremation technology, enhanced waste management, and upgraded infrastructure to boost hygiene, accessibility, and dignity for mourners and pilgrims alike. Balancing sacred customs with ecological responsibility, the project preserves ritual integrity while addressing environmental concerns.
Decades in the making, the revamp reflects broader rejuvenation efforts along the Ganga ranging from beautification of other ghats, improved safety, and infrastructure upgrades, to tourist-friendly amenities. These enhancements aim to uphold the cultural, religious, and architectural heritage of the ghats, ensuring that their spiritual essence remains intact even as they adapt to contemporary needs.
This makeover underscores a larger narrative: Varanasi is not content to remain a relic of devotion alone it’s evolving into a city that honors its mythology while embracing sustainable innovation, reinforcing its identity as a living, sacred, and forward-moving cultural heart.
