On October 18, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the government has been closely monitoring 54 key consumer items since the implementation of the revised Goods & Services Tax structure on September 22.
Speaking at a joint press conference with ministers Piyush Goyal and Ashwini Vaishnaw, she confirmed that “in every one of the 54 items, the tax benefit due to the GST reforms has been passed to the end-consumer.”
Examples include milk products, shampoos, household goods, solar cookers and umbrellas - where price reductions have exceeded expectations in several cases.
She noted that out of 3,169 complaints forwarded to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for non-pass-through of benefits, 3,075 have been acted on.
The rate rationalisation - cutting most GST slabs from four to two (5 % and 18 %) — kicked in alongside the Navratri festive season and is already reflected in higher electronics, vehicle and household goods consumption.
The government said it will keep engagement with retailers and industry ongoing to ensure full compliance, emphasising that the reform is designed for sustained relief, not just seasonal change.
