Gurugram, once characterized by its natural drainage systems, now faces severe waterlogging due to rapid urbanization. Historically, rainwater would flow naturally from the Aravalli Hills towards the Sahibi River catchment area. However, with the city's expansion, many of these natural pathways have been obstructed, leading to frequent flooding during monsoon rains.
The Sahibi River, which once served as a vital waterway, has been reduced to a polluted drain. Untreated industrial effluents and sewage have turned its waters pitch black, and its capacity to handle heavy flows has diminished due to encroachments and reduced width. Experts now describe the river as "ecologically dead," with little to no life thriving within it.
Furthermore, Gurugram's 60 natural canals have dwindled to just four, exacerbating the city's drainage issues. The loss of these water bodies, combined with the city's concrete landscape, has led to increased surface runoff and decreased groundwater recharge. Consequently, even moderate rains result in waterlogging on roads and underpasses.
To address these challenges, urban planning experts advocate for a unified authority to oversee the city's drainage and water management systems. Additionally, restoring natural water bodies, implementing sustainable urban planning practices, and enforcing regulations against encroachments are crucial steps towards mitigating flooding and ensuring the city's resilience against future water-related challenges.
