On National Bone and Joint Day, gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi warns that seemingly harmless products in our homes may impair digestion and cause long-term health issues. In his article, he pinpoints eight common toxin sources ranging from cleaning agents and plastics to personal care items, cookware and more, urging readers to reconsider everyday choices.
Dr. Sethi's top concerns include non-stick cookware, which may release PFAS chemicals when scratched; plastic food containers and wraps that leach BPA and phthalates; paraben- or fragrance-laden personal care products; and synthetic scented candles or air fresheners, known for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate the gut and respiratory systems.
He also registers caution over cleaning supplies with harsh chemicals, pesticide residues from packaged foods, tap water contaminants, and non-stick coated kitchen utensilsall capable of disturbing our microbiome and digestive comfort.
The solution? Swap these items for glass or ceramic cookware, BPA-free containers, unscented or paraben-free personal care products, and opt for fragrance-free cleaners or natural alternatives. Increase ventilation and choose organic produce where possible.
By adopting these simple changes, you not only protect gut health but also reduce systemic toxin exposure—supporting overall wellbeing. As Dr. Sethi concludes, creating a culturally safe home environment starts with smart, informed swaps not drastic overhauls.
