Set deep within Tawang’s Mukto circle lies Mirba, an ancient Monpa village whose name—‘Mi’ meaning human and ‘Ba’ meaning face echoes the nearby mountain’s human-like visage. Recognized as a heritage village, Mirba remains astonishingly untouched by modern materials like RCC, preserving centuries-old charm through homes crafted from wood, stone blocks, and mud plaster alone. These structures some single-, double-, even triple-storied are built with interlocking wood and stone and benefit from natural earthquake resistance, needing only routine roof repairs every two to three years.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu envisions Mirba as a model of sustainable, authentic rural living, where tradition and tranquility coalesce. To evaluate the village’s built integrity and tourism potential, a team of local officials, village heads, and Assam-based architects undertook thorough surveys topographic mapping, photogrammetry, and structural assessments.
With a serene climate and flourishing fields of ragi, maize, and millets, Mirba presents inviting potential for rural tourism, grounded in heritage, resilience, and harmony with nature
