In Dhemaji, Assam, designer Jagrity Phukan’s venture Way of Living Studio is redefining the connection between craft, community and consciousness. Rooted in the philosophy of “Soil-to-Silk,” the studio focuses on reviving Assam’s heritage silks — the golden Muga and the soft, eco-friendly Eri silk. Each thread carries a story of local farms, backyard rearing, hand-spinning, and traditional looms. Nearly 99 % of the artisans are rural women, many of whom have survived domestic abuse or poverty, now finding independence and dignity through their artistry.
By blending sustainability with empowerment, the initiative challenges the norms of fast fashion. Every product is handwoven with care, celebrating slowness, ecology and identity. Through her studio, Jagrity not only restores an ancient weaving culture but also builds a support system where women earn, learn and heal together. What emerges from Dhemaji is more than silk — it’s a movement of resilience, rooted pride, and mindful living, showing how tradition can power progress without losing its soul.
