When aspiring writers—like yourself—consider degrees, the choice between a journalism and a communications programme is significant.
A journalism degree focuses on the craft of storytelling in news: writing clean copy, verifying facts, interviewing sources, working under deadline pressure and knowing media ethics. It’s geared toward roles in newsrooms, broadcasters and investigative outfits.
On the other hand, a communications degree (or a combination degree) prepares you for a broader range of media careers: public relations, digital content strategy, branding, corporate communications, audience analysis and media production across platforms.
In today’s media landscape—where digital platforms blur the lines between communicator and reporter—employers value flexible, multi-skilled graduates who can write, strategise and deliver on multiple channels.
If your passion lies with frontline news, reporting current events or working in fast-paced media environments, choose journalism. If you’re drawn to shaping messages, campaigns, or storytelling across marketing or corporate domains, communications may offer more flexibility. A combined approach may be the best of both worlds.
Ultimately, the skills you build matter more than the title of your degree: writing proficiency, digital and multimedia literacy, strategic thinking and real-world experience will carry you forward—no matter which path you pick.
