In the crowded lanes of Mumbai’s sari markets, thousands of pre-loved saris wait quietly, their stories seemingly over. But for I was a Sari, each discarded drape is a beginning, not an ending. Founded in 2013 by Stefano Funari, the brand reimagines old Indian saris into premium fashion pieces while empowering underprivileged women from Mumbai’s communities.
The journey starts with careful sourcing. Out of thousands of saris, only a handful are chosen for their colours, prints, and fabric. The rest are responsibly donated to Goonj for further upcycling, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Designers let the sari lead the process-its character decides whether it becomes a bag, garment, or accessory.
Production happens in collaboration with NGO partners where women are trained in tailoring and embroidery. For many, this means financial independence, confidence, and a new identity. Every product then passes a strict quality check, proving that sustainability and premium fashion can coexist.
Operating on a zero-dividend model, I was a Sari reinvests all profits into women empowerment. The brand’s impact reached global platforms through its Circular Design Challenge win at Lakmé Fashion Week 2019 and a groundbreaking collaboration with Gucci-turning upcycling into a symbol of dignity, skill, and change.
