A startup founded by serial entrepreneur Devleena Bhattacharjee, Susanta Kundu, and Rahul Mehta. The company aims to address the global demand for seaweed—a nutrient-rich "superfood" and versatile industrial raw material—while providing climate-resilient livelihoods for India’s coastal populations.
The Technology Behind the Tides:
• AI-Driven Site Selection: Seaweed requires precise conditions (salinity, temperature, and sunlight). ClimaCrew’s platform analyzes raw data from NASA and other satellite geographic information systems (GIS) using machine learning to map out specific square feet of the ocean suitable for cultivation.
• Marine Parameter Assessment: The platform assesses nutrient levels and currents, reducing the risk of crop failure for traditional fishing communities who often lack technical data for deep-sea farming.
Business Model and Impact:
• CDMO Strategy: ClimaCrew operates as a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organisation. They partner with NGOs to train fishing communities, buy back the cultivated seaweed, and process it at their dedicated plant in Chiplun, Maharashtra.
• One-Stop Shop for Global Brands: The startup supplies processed seaweed to diverse sectors, including agrochemicals (biostimulants), poultry/aqua feeds, and food processing (thickeners like agar and carrageenan).
• Coastal Empowerment: By engaging the fishing communities of the western coast, the startup provides an alternative, sustainable income stream that isn't dependent on declining fish stocks.
Future Roadmap:
ClimaCrew plans to transition its AI platform into a SaaS (Software as a Service) model, allowing global fisheries and international seaweed cultivators to use their technology for marine assessment. With a focus on the "Blue Economy," the startup is positioning India as a major hub for carbon-sequestering seaweed production, aiming for a significant share of the global seaweed market which is projected to grow rapidly through 2030.
