One More Reel, Then I’ll Study: The Procrastination Cycle

“Just five more minutes.” Almost every student has said this at some point. We open our phones to watch one reel, reply to a message, or take a short break before starting work. But somehow those five minutes quietly turn into an hour. Suddenly the day feels almost over and the assignment, project, or study session we planned to do is still waiting. This is the cycle of procrastination — a habit many people experience in their daily lives. It is often misunderstood as laziness, but procrastination is usually connected to feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or unsure about where to begin. When a task seems difficult or boring, our mind naturally chooses activities that feel easier and more enjoyable in the moment, such as scrolling through social media or watching videos. Procrastination may feel harmless at first, but over time it can affect productivity, confidence, and even mental well-being. Important tasks start piling up, deadlines come closer, and the pressure to finish everything at the last minute increases. This often leads to rushed work and unnecessary stress that could have been avoided with better time management. Learning to manage procrastination is important because it helps people stay organised, reduce stress, and perform better in both academic and personal life. When tasks are completed on time, it creates a sense of achievement and allows more time for rest and other activities. Breaking this cycle does not always require major changes. Small steps can make a big difference. One helpful approach is to start with the smallest part of a task instead of thinking about the entire workload. Once the first step is taken, the task often feels less overwhelming. Reducing distractions is another useful strategy. Keeping the phone away while studying, creating a simple to-do list, or setting a specific time for focused work can help improve concentration. Some people also follow the “25-minute focus rule,” where they work for 25 minutes and take a short break before continuing. Most importantly, it is important to remember that things do not have to be perfect to begin. Many people delay tasks because they want everything to be done perfectly from the start. In reality, progress begins with simply taking the first step. Once we start, completing the task often feels much easier than we expected.
