In the age of streaming and social media, discovering music, movies, or trends feels effortless. Platforms like Spotify, Instagram, and YouTube constantly recommend songs, videos, and posts tailored to our preferences. But this convenience raises an interesting question — are we really discovering culture, or are algorithms guiding us toward it?
Today, algorithms quietly influence what people watch, listen to, and even discuss online. A few seconds on Instagram can suddenly fill your feed with trending films, viral clips, or new music suggestions you never searched for. These recommendations are based on your past behaviour — what you watch, like, or skip.
However, outside influence shaping taste isn’t entirely new. In the past, people relied on radio jockeys, critics, record stores, or friends to discover new music and films. The difference now is scale and speed.
Algorithms have become invisible curators of culture, shaping trends and conversations across the internet. While they make discovery easier, they also blur the line between personal choice and digital suggestion.
In a world guided by algorithms, the real question is - are we choosing what we like, or are our choices being chosen for us?
