Google has begun rolling out generative AI features inside Gmail, changing how users handle emails. The new tools can summarise long email threads, draft quick replies, suggest action points, and even help users search their inbox by asking questions in plain language. The goal is simple: save time and reduce the stress of managing crowded inboxes.
However, this update has also triggered fresh privacy concerns. To function effectively, the AI needs access to users’ emails, which means scanning personal conversations. While Google claims that human reviewers won’t read emails and that personal data won’t be used to train the AI, experts remain cautious. Any system that processes sensitive information carries the risk of misuse or legal access under certain conditions.
For users who are uncomfortable, Google allows these AI features to be turned off. As AI becomes more deeply embedded into everyday tools, the debate between convenience and privacy is becoming harder to ignore.
