Certification alert: FSSAI’s new organic rules could impact your products!

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is revamping its organic food regulations to match updated international standards. A dedicated committee has been formed to oversee this overhaul, which will cover organic agricultural products and certification processes. The move comes as India updates the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) 2014, reflecting changes in global organic markets and practices.

The NPOP, recognized under FSSAI’s 2017 regulations, sets rules for organic farming, accreditation of certification agencies, and use of the India Organic label. Its framework aligns with international trade standards, with crop production rules acknowledged as equivalent by the European Commission, Switzerland, and Great Britain.

While the timeline for finalizing the new regulations is not yet announced, this update signals India’s growing prominence in the global organic sector over the past two decades. The reforms aim to streamline certification, strengthen quality assurance, and boost India’s competitiveness in the international organic market.
