Gen Z's revolt in Nepal: Against Nepotism, for Accountability!

Nepal has entered a crisis as Generation Z protests erupt across the nation, directed at government corruption and the contentious “nepo kids” phenomenon - where children of political elites flaunt privilege while ordinary youths endure hardship. What began as resistance to a sweeping ban on social media platforms has morphed into a broader movement demanding accountability and reform.

The protests, organized via TikTok, Reddit, and Viber, saw demonstrators invoke hashtags like #NepoKids and #NepoBaby, showcasing viral videos of luxury lifestyles enjoyed by politicians’ children contrasted starkly against the struggles faced by Nepal’s unemployed youth. At least 19 protesters were killed in clashes prompting Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s resignation, while the government also revoked the social media ban amid mounting pressure .

Socio-political activist Ranju Darshana of Kathmandu reflected the sentiment driving the movement: “The GenZ protest was primarily against corruption and seeking accountability from the system.” The uprising underscores a generational demand for transparency, equal opportunity, and political integrity in Nepal.
