China has officially opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province, claiming the title of the world’s highest bridge. Rising 625 metres (around 2,050 feet) above the river and gorge below, it surpasses the Beipanjiang Bridge - also in Guizhou - which stood at 565.4 metres.
Stretching a total of 2,890 metres with a main span of 1,420 metres, this suspension bridge is part of the expressway connecting Liuzhi and Anlong. Construction began in early 2022 and was completed by late September 2025.
Engineers employed advanced techniques - high-precision monitoring, ultra-strong steel, wind-resistant designs - to ensure safety and resilience in the mountainous terrain. The bridge is expected to cut travel time across Huajiang Canyon from about two hours to just minutes, enhancing connectivity and economic development in this remote region.
