From hobby to hustle: Why Gen Z believes gaming and live streaming can pay the bills?

1. Passion + Participation = Confidence
Gen Z plays games frequently and deeply. For instance, studies show that over 90% of Gen Z between ages 16-24 play video games weekly. Many also follow gaming content, influencers, or streamers, and a large share have tried creating gaming content themselves—whether streaming, creating videos, or modding.

2. Revenue Streams and Monetisation
Streaming platforms like Twitch, YouTube, Instagram Live, etc., allow Gen Z creators to monetize via ads, subscriptions, donations, sponsorships. In India, for example, surveys show that over 90% believe gaming is a viable career option. Many also believe gaming boosts confidence, attention, reduces stress, beyond just being fun.

3. Changing Social Perception & Infrastructure
Gaming and esports are gaining legitimacy. In many places, what was once seen as just “wasting time” is now treated as a professional field - with esports leagues, tournaments, content creation houses, brand sponsorships, and even discussions of esports in wider international sport contexts. Meanwhile, the tools needed - high-speed internet, affordable devices, digital platforms—are more widespread, lowering the barriers to entry.

4. Desire for Creative Freedom, Flexibility & Identity
Many Gen Zers value careers that give them creative control, personal branding, community building, flexibility of schedule. Streaming and gaming offer all that: one can build a unique identity, engage with a community, and often work from anywhere.

5. Social & Psychological Rewards
Gaming is also deeply social for Gen Z. It offers connection, belonging, social interaction beyond physical constraints. Streaming adds a layer: followers, feedback, recognition. These non-monetary rewards reinforce the belief that investing time into gaming or streaming has value.

Challenges & Caveats
Of course, not every gamer or streamer succeeds; the income is often uneven, requires consistent effort, content quality, building audience. There are risks: burnout, instability of income, platform dependence. It’s not a guaranteed path, but many Gen Z see the chances as worth it.

In sum, for Gen Z, gaming and live streaming are not just entertainment—they align with their values (creativity, autonomy, identity), they have real business models behind them, and social acceptance is growing. All this makes them see these paths not just as fun side-hustles but potential full-blown careers.
